Basseterre Entry Requirements

Visa, immigration, and customs information

Important Notice Entry requirements can change at any time. Always verify current requirements with official government sources before traveling.
Information last reviewed December 2024. Always verify with official government sources before traveling as entry requirements can change with little notice.
Basseterre, the capital of Saint Kitts and Nevis, welcomes international travelers through Robert L. Bradshaw International Airport and cruise ship terminals. The twin-island nation maintains relatively straightforward entry requirements for most visitors, with many nationalities enjoying visa-free access for tourism purposes. The immigration process is generally efficient, though travelers should be prepared with all necessary documentation to ensure smooth entry. Visitors to Basseterre and Saint Kitts and Nevis must possess a valid passport, proof of onward travel, and sufficient funds for their stay. The standard tourist entry permits visitors to stay for up to 90 days, though this can vary by nationality. Immigration officials may ask about accommodation arrangements and the purpose of visit, so having confirmation details readily available is advisable. The country has implemented various entry protocols over recent years, including health-related measures, so staying informed about current requirements is essential. Whether arriving by air at Robert L. Bradshaw International Airport or by sea at Port Zante cruise terminal, the entry process follows Caribbean Community (CARICOM) standards. The immigration and customs procedures are straightforward for compliant travelers, typically taking 15-30 minutes during normal periods, though arrival times during peak cruise ship days or multiple flight arrivals may experience longer wait times.

Arrival Process

The entry process at Basseterre involves immigration clearance, baggage collection, and customs inspection. During peak times (cruise ship arrivals or multiple flight arrivals), expect moderate queues. Having all documentation prepared in advance expedites the process significantly.

1
Arrival and Disembarkation
Upon landing at Robert L. Bradshaw International Airport or docking at Port Zante, follow signs to Immigration. Ensure you have completed any arrival forms distributed during your flight or provided at the port.
2
Immigration Control
Present your passport, completed immigration/customs form, and return/onward ticket to the immigration officer. Be prepared to answer questions about your stay, accommodation, and purpose of visit. The officer will stamp your passport with entry permission, typically for 30-90 days.
3
Baggage Claim
Proceed to baggage claim area to collect your luggage. Verify all bags are accounted for before proceeding to customs. Report missing or damaged luggage to airline representatives immediately.
4

Pass through customs control where officers may inspect your luggage. If you have items to declare or exceed duty-free allowances, use the 'Red Channel' or 'Goods to Declare' line. Otherwise, proceed through the 'Green Channel' or 'Nothing to Declare.'
5

After clearing customs, you'll enter the arrivals area where you can access taxis, rental cars, or hotel shuttles. Official taxis are available with set rates to various destinations.

Tips for Smooth Entry

Have all documents organized and easily accessible before reaching the immigration counter. Use a document folder or clear plastic sleeve for quick retrieval.
Print physical copies of your accommodation confirmations and return tickets. While digital copies are usually acceptable, internet connectivity issues can cause delays.
Dress appropriately and be courteous with immigration officers. Professional appearance and polite demeanor facilitate smoother processing.
Declare all items that exceed duty-free allowances or fall into restricted categories. Failure to declare can result in fines, confiscation, or prosecution.
Keep valuables, medications, and essential items in carry-on luggage in case of baggage delays.
Exchange some currency before arrival or at the airport. While US dollars are widely accepted, having Eastern Caribbean Dollars (XCD) for small purchases is convenient.
Save the immigration phone number (+1-869-465-2521) in your phone in case of questions or issues during your stay.
If traveling during peak season (December-April), arrive early for departure as airports and ports can be congested.

Customs & Duty-Free

Saint Kitts and Nevis Customs operates under CARICOM regulations with specific allowances for duty-free goods. All travelers must complete a customs declaration form accurately. The country takes smuggling and undeclared goods seriously, with significant penalties for violations. When in doubt, declare items to avoid complications.

Health Requirements

Saint Kitts and Nevis maintains health entry requirements to protect public health. Requirements may change based on global health situations, so checking current regulations before travel is essential.

Required Vaccinations

  • Yellow Fever - Required ONLY if arriving from or transiting through a country with risk of yellow fever transmission. Certificate must be presented at immigration. Travelers arriving from the Americas (except Trinidad and Tobago, Panama, and certain South American countries) typically do not require yellow fever vaccination.

Recommended Vaccinations

  • Routine vaccinations - Ensure up-to-date with routine vaccines including MMR (measles, mumps, rubella), DPT (diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus), polio, and annual flu vaccine
  • Hepatitis A - Recommended for all travelers as transmission can occur through contaminated food or water
  • Hepatitis B - Recommended for travelers who may have sexual contact, receive medical treatment, or get tattoos/piercings
  • Typhoid - Recommended for travelers eating outside major hotels and restaurants
  • Rabies - Consider for travelers involved in outdoor activities, working with animals, or staying for extended periods in rural areas

Health Insurance

Travel health insurance is not mandatory for entry but is strongly recommended. Medical care in Saint Kitts and Nevis can be expensive for visitors, and comprehensive insurance should cover emergency medical treatment, hospitalization, and medical evacuation. The main medical facility is Joseph N. France General Hospital in Basseterre. Serious medical emergencies may require evacuation to nearby islands or the United States. Verify your insurance policy covers Caribbean travel and keep policy documents and emergency contact numbers accessible.

Current Health Requirements: Health entry requirements can change rapidly based on disease outbreaks and global health situations. Always check the official Saint Kitts and Nevis government website (www.gov.kn) and consult your country's travel health advisory service 4-6 weeks before departure. Monitor updates regarding COVID-19 protocols, testing requirements, quarantine rules, and health declaration forms. Some travelers may need to complete online health declaration forms before arrival. Keep digital and physical copies of all vaccination certificates and health documentation.

Special Situations

Additional requirements for specific circumstances.

Traveling with Children

Children, including infants, must have their own valid passport. Minors (under 18) traveling without both parents should carry a notarized letter of consent from the non-traveling parent(s) authorizing the trip. The letter should include travel dates, destination, accompanying adult details, and contact information for parents. Single parents should carry the child's birth certificate and, if applicable, custody documents or death certificate of other parent. Divorced parents should have custody documentation readily available. These requirements help prevent international child abduction and are strictly enforced. Failure to provide proper documentation may result in denied boarding or entry.

Traveling with Pets

Importing pets to Saint Kitts and Nevis requires advance planning and documentation. Requirements include: (1) Import permit from the Veterinary Department obtained at least 30 days before travel; (2) Health certificate issued by licensed veterinarian within 7 days of travel; (3) Rabies vaccination certificate - must be vaccinated at least 30 days but not more than 12 months before arrival; (4) Microchip for identification (recommended); (5) Some animals may require quarantine period. Dogs from rabies-free countries may have reduced requirements. Prohibited breeds include Pit Bulls and certain aggressive dog breeds. Contact the Veterinary Department at +1-869-465-2333 ext. 1038 well in advance. Pets must enter through Robert L. Bradshaw International Airport, not via cruise ship. Airlines have separate pet travel requirements and fees.

Extended Stays

Tourist visas typically allow 30-90 days depending on nationality. To extend your stay beyond the initial period, apply to the Immigration Department before your authorized stay expires. Extension applications require: completed application form, valid passport, proof of sufficient funds, accommodation details, return ticket (may need to be changed), reason for extension, and fee payment (approximately XCD $100-200). Extensions are granted at discretion of Immigration officials and typically for 30-90 days additional. Apply at least one week before expiration. For stays exceeding 6 months, you may need to apply for a different visa category. Working in Saint Kitts and Nevis requires a work permit obtained by the employer before arrival. Overstaying your visa can result in fines, deportation, and future entry bans.

Business Travelers

Business visitors entering for meetings, conferences, or negotiations can typically enter under tourist visa provisions for stays up to 30-90 days. However, you cannot engage in gainful employment or receive payment from local sources without a work permit. Carry documentation including business invitation letter, conference registration, or meeting details. For longer business engagements or employment, a work permit is required before arrival. The employer must apply to the Labour Department. Business visitors should declare the purpose of visit as 'business' rather than 'tourism' at immigration.

Cruise Ship Passengers

Cruise passengers arriving at Port Zante for day visits typically do not need visas if their nationality would qualify for visa-free entry. Passengers must carry valid passport or approved cruise ship ID (for closed-loop cruises from US ports). Immigration processing is usually handled by the cruise line. Passengers must return to the ship before departure and cannot stay on the island beyond the ship's sailing. For passengers joining or leaving a cruise in Basseterre (embark/disembark), standard entry requirements apply including proof of onward travel and accommodation if staying overnight.

Citizens of CARICOM States

Citizens of Caribbean Community (CARICOM) member states enjoy special privileges including visa-free entry for up to 6 months, ability to work without permits in some categories under the CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME), and simplified immigration procedures. CARICOM nationals should present valid passport or CARICOM travel card. Skilled nationals may qualify for automatic work authorization in certain categories. Check with Immigration Department regarding specific CSME provisions and eligible occupations.

Citizenship by Investment Participants

Saint Kitts and Nevis operates a Citizenship by Investment Program. New citizens should carry their Certificate of Registration and new passport. First-time entry may require additional documentation from the Citizenship by Investment Unit. Contact the CIU at +1-869-467-1526 for specific entry procedures for new citizens and their families.
